We have explored and particularly analyzed the best marathons to run in France and Europe and their iconic routes.

What are the 6 greatest marathons in Europe?

Do you want to beat your personal marathon record? Are you looking for a so-called flat course to increase your chances of success? Low elevation and smooth asphalt will be your best allies! Where are you looking to walk the same streets as the greatest athletes and explore legendary city centers?  Whether you're a beginner or seasoned runner, discover the most prestigious European marathons.

1. Why is Berlin one of the best marathons in the world?

Berlin Marathon: a route known for its speed

The Berlin Marathon is often recognized as the fastest in Europe and the World. You're probably wondering why, right? This is due to the specifics of the course. This is very flat, sheltered from the wind with long straight lines, ideal if you're aiming to break your personal record.

🏆 The women's world record was also beaten in 2023 by Tigist Assefa, in 2h 11mn and 53s. Among the men c'is Eliud Kipchoge who holds the best time of the marathon with a time of 2h 1 min and 09s.

Berlin Marathon: among the WORLD MARATHON MAJORS🏅

The Berlin Marathon is part of the Six Marathon Majors: a dream challenge for marathon enthusiasts. Established in 2006, it is an annual competition bringing together six prestigious marathons: Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Chicago, London, and Boston. By completing the 6 courses, you can obtain the mythical 6-star medal. Registrations can sometimes be complicated as these races are in high demand.

Berlin being part of this competition makes it even more sought after. Therefore, participating is more complicated than other European marathons. Indeed, registration is either through a lottery or by achieving minimum results (a qualification system using a timing scale). In 2024, more than 45,000 participants started this 50th edition.

Berlin Marathon: a historic and festive course

It is one of the most beautiful courses in Europe, run along the main avenues and streets of West Berlin's city center. Starting in front of the Reichstag and finishing on the Kurfurstendam. This course allows you to discover the city's monuments: like the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, and the Berlin Diocese. The number of spectators and the atmosphere around the race will surely boost you. Your training plan will carry you to your goal.

2. One of Europe's best historical marathons: London

London Marathon: conducive to performance

The London Marathon ranks second in this list of the flattest marathons. Known for its fast and flat course, making it one of the most popular events for marathoners seeking performance. With minimal elevation and wide, well-maintained roads, the conditions are ideal for breaking personal records. As part of the World Marathon Major, it receives many requests (+ over 500,000 this year), but "only" 43,000 participants get to start the course, either through a lottery or a personal time meeting the criteria.

The best times in the London Marathon

🏆 The London Marathon record was previously held by Eliud Kipchoge in 2h 02mn 37s.

In the 2023 edition, this record was shattered by Kelvin Kiptum in 2h01 and 25 seconds

The female athlete holding the best time is British Paula Radcliffe with a time of 2h 15mn and 25s (former world record). In 2023, victory went to Sifan Hassan in 2h18 and 13 seconds.

For the 2024 edition, the runners Alexander Mutiso Munyao and Peres Jepchirchir claimed victory in the race with times of 2 h 4 min 1 s and 2 h 16 min 16 s respectively.

London Marathon: a legendary route

The London Marathon is considered one of the most beautiful marathons due to its stunning city-center course. Indeed, the London Marathon route passes by iconic landmarks in the city: Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the Thames embankments, and the city's lively districts.

A charitable race through the London Marathon Foundation

Beyond athletic performance, the London Marathon is also charitable. Millions of pounds are raised each year for charitable works, supporting causes like health and wellness, education, and the environment. Thus, this event embodies the sport's ability to unite for a good cause.

3. The famous Valencia Marathon, favored by the French community

Valencia Marathon: ideal weather conditions for performance

With its relatively level course, this race offers you a conducive terrain for quick times. One of this marathon's other strengths is its climate. Held in December along the Mediterranean coast, it guarantees perfect climate conditions for your race.

🏆 The Valencian event records in 2023 are held by Sisay Lemma for men (2h01 and 48s) and Worknesh Degefa for women (2h 15mn and 51s).

Valencia Marathon: a charming course

The Valencia Marathon is also renowned for its exceptional course. You'll have a unique experience through the city's ancient and modern buildings from the starting line, located in the heart of Valencia. You will notably pass through Jardíns del Turia and the Marina de València

4. One of the easiest marathons: Amsterdam Marathon

Amsterdam Marathon: conditions appreciated for a quick time!

Amsterdam Marathon is also a course to take if you're aiming for a quick time! It's known for its speed, thanks to a very flat profile. Enough to set a Personal Record provided you're optimally prepared. Unlike Valencia, the weather can be capricious, but that is part of the experience's charm.

Amsterdam Marathon: a unique setting

The Amsterdam Marathon kicks off with flair at the Olympic Stadium, guiding you through iconic city sites. After a warm-up at Vondelpark, you'll discover the Rijksmuseum and the Zuid district before reaching the Amstel. A stretch along the river awaits you before facing the formidable "30 wall" in western Amsterdam. The final kilometers promise an electrifying atmosphere by the Singel canal, before finishing in style at the Olympic Stadium after one last traverse of Vondelpark.

5. Cinema marathon: Deauville (France)

Deauville Marathon: a flat course

The ultimate Norman rendezvous! The course is ideal for achieving a good performance. With its well-maintained and relatively flat roads, runners can maintain a consistent pace.

In 2023, the International Marathon in Deauville was added to the World Marathon Majors ranking by age category. All marathon participants aged 40 and over earn points to access the Six Majors World Championship ranking.

Deauville Marathon: a cinematic setting

Situated on the beautiful Norman coast, the Deauville Marathon enjoys an exceptional setting. Its elegant city center, with its distinctive architecture and golden sandy beaches, creates a stunning backdrop for your marathon. Upon finishing, you'll have the privilege of treading the famous Deauville boardwalk, lined with iconic bathing cabins representing legendary cinema figures. It will be a finale with a tide of supporters who came especially for the race, creating an extraordinary atmosphere. Just like a true actor, don't forget to smile as you cross the finish line!

What are the toughest marathons?

1. The Mont Blanc Marathon, an extraordinary trail

Mont Blanc Marathon: an endurance race in the Alps.

Each year in June, trail running enthusiasts gather in Chamonix for the Mont Blanc Marathon, one of the world's most beautiful mountain marathons. This iconic race, although challenging, will offer you an unforgettable experience, guiding you through the steep paths of the Mont Blanc massif. These 42km include an elevation gain of nearly 2,500m. Steep climbs and breathtaking descents await you before reaching the Aiguille des Posettes. Then you will finish on the majestic plateau of Planpraz at 2,000m altitude. To boost your chances of success, make sure to gear up well!

Mont Blanc Marathon: Kilian Jornet, the mountain master

Kilian Jornet is a regular at the race, with five victories under his belt; this Spanish ultra-trailer dominates the competition effortlessly. For him, this race is often part of his preparation for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, held two months later.

2. The Jungfrau Marathon (Switzerland): one of Europe's most beautiful marathons

A complex route in a breathtaking setting

The Jungfrau Marathon takes place in early September at the heart of the majestic Swiss Alps, ranking among the world's toughest marathons. And it is no surprise, with an elevation gain of nearly 1,800m and altitudes often exceeding 2,000m. Steep slopes, rocky paths, and unpredictable weather conditions add to the complexity of this extraordinary challenge. The steep ascent of the Kleine Scheidegg pass represents the most dreaded moment of the race.

Despite the difficulty, the Jungfrau Marathon's course guarantees majestic landscapes overlooking peaks like the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau. Despite the difficulty, the spectators' atmosphere and support create an environment worth taking on this challenge.

Whether you're seeking to break your personal record or experience a memorable marathon, options abound in France and Europe. From fast and flat courses to mountainous challenges, each marathon offers its share of thrills and breathtaking scenery. Prepare to surpass yourself and push your limits! So, choose the marathon that will make your heart race and take you to new heights!
