If you revolve around the trail world, you have certainly heard of Kilian Jornet's latest challenge. Indeed, more than a runner, a mountaineer, or an ultra-trailer, the Catalan is above all an adventure man. Behind exceptional performances and a five-star Race Results hides an irresistible will to discover the world by testing the limits of human resistance.
With his challenge "States of Elevation", the one nicknamed in french the ultra-terrestre has once again marked the history of endurance sports by connecting, with the sole human strength, the 72 summits over 14,000 feet (4,267 meters), nicknamed the “14ers” (fourteeners) located in the 48 continental American states.
Kilian Jornet's challenge "States of Elevation", what is it?
To understand the scope of the feat achieved by Kilian, one must first grasp the stakes of the challenge.
🇺🇸 "States of Elevation": the principle
Anyone who follows Kilian Jornet's adventures knows that he doesn't just hang up bib numbers of ultra-trails. In 2023, the Catalan had completed a crossing of the Pyrenees before tackling the 82 alpine peaks as part of his project "Alpine Connection".
This time, he crossed the Atlantic with a new challenge in mind: "States of Elevation". The goal? Climbing the 72 fourteeners in the 48 continental American states, using only human strength (his own body and a bicycle).
🏔️ What is a "14er" (fourteener)?
In the United States, the "14ers" (fourteeners) refer to peaks exceeding 14,000 feet in altitude. There are 72 (excluding private properties), mainly distributed in Colorado, California, and Washington. Their ascent has become a kind of rite of passage for American climbers and they are imbued with a very strong cultural dimension since the 19th century.
While some mountaineering challenges already exist in these mountains, such as the Norman’s 13 or the Nolan’s 14, no one had attempted until now to connect all the peaks in a single expedition, following a continuous route that does not require any motorized transportation. Have you dreamed of it? Kilian Jornet did it!
👀 The crazy numbers of Kilian Jornet's challenge
When looking at the statistics of the project “States of Elevation”, it's impossible not to be amazed.
72 "14ers" climbed
31 days of adventure
6 States crossed (Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington)
5,145 kilometers traveled (on foot and by bike)
123,045 meters of cumulative positive elevation gain

Kilian Jornet's Itinerary: The United States in All Their Forms
From Colorado to the State of Washington, Kilian Jornet's challenge led him to traverse the United States and their unique variety of landscapes and climates.
🟢 The Departure: From Longs Peak to California
It is at Longs Peak, a mythical summit of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, that Kilian Jornet kicked off his journey on August 31, 2025. 16 days to connect 56 14ers in this state, which has the highest concentration.
Between running at a sustained pace, occasional climbing, and rallying the different starting points by bike, the challenge began strongly. Especially since the weather, known for being capricious in this region, did not spare him: thunderstorms and snowstorms rhythmically marked his days of approximately 16 hours of effort on average.
1,826 kilometers and 73,385 meters of positive elevation gain later, the ultra-terrestrial left Colorado heading towards the Sierra Nevada, in California. 5 days of biking, a crossing of New Mexico and Arizona with a total of 1,412 kilometers and 9,700 meters of positive elevation gain.
This journey, named “Desert Ride”, was an opportunity to face the scorching heat sometimes followed by violent winds or torrential rains. Kilian is not assisted by any vehicle. He carries all of his equipment, food, and hydration throughout the adventure, including on these transition sections. Everything relies on autonomy and exceptional adaptability and resistance.
🧗♂️ California: from Norman’s 13 to Mount Shasta
Although Colorado was the largest part of Kilian Jornet’s challenge, California held many surprises for him, starting with the formidable Norman’s 13, known for its technicality. 13 summits, 160 kilometers, 12,000 meters of positive elevation gain while operating in an environment requiring constant vigilance and commitment. Under these conditions, it is difficult to recover and enjoy restorative sleep, especially when the weather gets involved, leaving no respite for the Catalan and putting his body and mental strength to a tough test.
Once he overcame this challenge with a record time of 56 hours and 11 minutes (as if he didn't want to linger), heading towards White Mountain Peak and its 4,344 meters. This summit, the 70th of the traverse for Kilian, is located in the Inyo Mountains and features a very mineral, even desert-like landscape.
Next, heading towards Mount Shasta, the famous volcano known for its moody, changing environment… But before that, Kilian Jornet had to get back on his bike saddle for 626 kilometers, covered in just a few days. Once at the base of his 71st fourteener, he begins an ascent that will lead him to push his limits ever further. Snow, extremely violent winds, and very very low temperatures… Nothing will be spared for him as he is already exhausted from weeks of intense adventure.
This challenge marks the end of his stay in California. Kilian then takes the road for 800 kilometers through Oregon to his ultimate ascent in Washington.
🙌 Mount Rainier: Final Challenge of a Unique Feat
A particularly impressive active volcano, Mount Rainier does not easily let itself be tamed. With over 5,000 kilometers under his belt, Kilian does not arrive on conquered territory for his ultimate ascent.
He must deal with a very technical glacial environment that leaves no room for error. Exhausted, the champion nevertheless manages to reach the summit, completing an unprecedented traverse that lasted 31 days.
31 days at the pace of “a Tour de France and an ultra-trail each day”. 31 days to once again enter history.
States of Elevation: Kilian Jornet's Physical, Mental, and Logistical Challenge
With his challenge, Kilian Jornet once again pushes the limits of endurance. An accomplishment that is only possible with a meticulously planned strategy and a keen awareness of difficulties.
⛈️ Altitude, weather, terrain: against the merciless nature
By definition, “14ers” are located at over 4,000 meters in altitude. At this altitude, oxygen becomes scarce. Despite Kilian Jornet's predispositions and complete acclimatization to altitude, this parameter weighs heavily on the scale when it repeats 72 times in such a short time. Fatigue then comes into play, making each step heavier than the previous one.
But altitude often comes with another equally formidable parameter: weather. Rain, wind, thunderstorms, intense heat… nothing would have been spared for the Catalan over the kilometers. Significantly complicating the effort, weather conditions also play a role in the management of fatigue and equipment. Ignoring it means exposing oneself to premature exhaustion, which does not forgive on a challenge of such magnitude.
💤 Sleep, recovery, nutrition
Recovery and nutrition are pillars of performance in running and more broadly in endurance sports. During his “States of Elevation” challenge, Kilian Jornet had to demonstrate boundless adaptability to ensure minimum sleep and sufficient nutrition to face the ascents and long bike rides.
In fact, he slept an average of 5 hours per night, either on the ground or in a parked van that followed him. An achievement within the achievement, signifying extraordinary resilience.
👟 Equipment and Minimalism
As part of his challenge, Kilian Jornet carries ultralight equipment. He is of course equipped by his own brand NNormal with, in particular, shoe prototypes. An opportunity to showcase his products and their undeniable quality.
On his back: a minimalist mountaineering bag containing the vital minimum to allow him to run with very little additional weight. Even for his bike, he opts for small lightweight saddlebags that are easily transportable.
⚠️ It is worth noting, however, that despite long sections in total autonomy, a van was regularly present to help him rest and replenish supplies and any potential equipment.

The symbolic dimension of Kilian Jornet's challenge
🌳 A strong environmental commitment
The project “States of Elevation” is part of the continuity of the actions of the Kilian Jornet Foundation, which supports the preservation of mountain ecosystems. It thus aims to raise awareness about the fragility of high-altitude environments, threatened by climate change.
It is through this commitment that the Catalan desired to link all the “14ers” to human strength, without resorting to motorization as part of his effort.
🙏 The strength of the community
Upon his arrival, Kilian’s words are unequivocal:
“I am happy to have succeeded. At first, it was just an idea on a map, without being sure it was possible. Now I know. Beyond the numbers, it is above all a human adventure and a way to discover places that have become dear to me.”
Kilian Jornet
It must be said that he was able to benefit from exceptional and unwavering support during his journey. Olivia Amber, Rod Farvard, and Kimberly Strom were by his side during his crossing of the terrible Norman’s 13, providing moral support as well as better security on the most dangerous sections.
On the last section of cycling, he shared just under 100 kilometers with the famous triathlete Ian Murray, passionate about his challenge. But beyond these “star” figures, it is dozens and dozens of fans who have supported him over the days. Not to mention the media excitement and the encouragements on social networks!
💪 What Kilian Jornet's challenge says about human limits
Kilian's guiding thread remains voluntary simplicity: a return to simplicity, to nature, to the body. Thus, “States of Elevation” is not only a physical feat; it is a reflection on freedom. Pushing one's boundaries without competition, simply to explore. A way, as beautiful as it is brutal, to remind that the mountain remains a field for self-experimentation.
We do not yet know what Kilian Jornet's next challenge will be, but for now, there is still time to savor the conclusion of “States of Elevation”. An ode to altitude, courage, and the mountain. One thing is certain: Kilian Jornet has not finished pushing the limits.
