Running goal
10 km run… Some find it easy, almost too easy. Others think that they are incapable of it. This distance seems in any case to be an almost mandatory checkpoint for road runners.
So, how to successfully overcome this challenge? Is it really necessary to prepare for a 10 km run? We give you our opinion and some tips for a successful race!
10 km run: an achievable objective for any beginner
10 km is a perfect race for beginner runners. Accessible and challenging, this distance promises great emotions no matter the goal.
👌 Is running 10 km easy?
Specifically, with a well-designed training plan, a 10 km run is accessible to the majority of beginner runners. But it would be a mistake to consider this distance as an easy one. In reality, it all depends on the intensity you want to apply. Indeed, the relatively “low” mileage allows running at a high speed, “on the edge”.
Regardless, at Campus, we have chosen to offer 10k training plans with a minimum duration of 8 weeks It may seem like a lot, and yet! If you are new to running, you are particularly exposed to injuries due to a lack of progress. By opting for a long plan, you set all the odds in your favor to reach the starting line well prepared.
🤔 Is running 10 km in 1 hour a good time?
Tricky question. In absolute terms, yes, running 10 km in 1 hour is a good time. According to the Great Running Survey 2025 conducted by Campus, the average time to run 10 km is 1 hour 1 minute and 46 seconds for women and 50 minutes and 41 seconds for men.
Hence, we could assume that a 1-hour time is good for women and average for men. But reality is a bit more complex. Indeed, only 16% of respondents consider themselves beginners. They are probably overrepresented in times exceeding 1 hour, regardless of gender.
Ultimately, appreciating a time is a delicate exercise. A good time for 10 km is first and foremost the one you aim for and manage to achieve with appropriate and relevant training.

Training Plan for Running 10 km: Our Tips for Good Progress.
What should a good plan consist of to be able to run 10 km? Explanations.
🙏 Structuring your preparation: the fundamentals
A good plan is based on two essential principles: progression (gradual increase in frequency, volume, and intensity) and diversity of workouts.
👉 Why? Simply to protect you as much as possible from the risk of injury and maintain motivation over time.
🔢 How many weeks and workouts per week?
The usual approach to determining the content of a training plan involves aiming for a time and designing your plan around this goal. At Campus, we have a different vision. We prefer to base ourselves on your past performances to establish your runner profile with maximum precision.
Next, we propose a goal that seems consistent to us. You can aim for a more or less ambitious time depending on your level of commitment and your background, but you can't simply ask for a plan based on a target time.
Overall, for beginners, we will have 3 workouts per week over 12 weeks, to which you must add a strength & conditioning workout. This represents a volume between 20 and 35 kilometers depending on your speed. This is the minimum to build a solid foundation while working towards achieving a goal (reasonable!).
On the other hand, if you have a bit more experience and a strong desire to challenge yourself, you can increase to 4 or even 5 running workouts per week. This is also highly recommended if you want to get below 45 minutes, or even below 40 minutes for the more ambitious.
What is a good 10 km plan? Improve performance through MAS, endurance, and consistency.
Running 10 kilometers requires working on your speed, your resistance, and your mental strength while developing a necessary endurance base to keep the distance.
🐢 Endurance, the foundation of all progress
Base endurance constitutes the majority of the weekly volume (slow running, warm-up, recovery, long runs). It's this pace that will allow you to accumulate optimal mileage while generating a minimum of fatigue. In a 10 km plan, no base endurance run exceeds 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
It may already seem long compared to the average 10 km competition time! But here, the easy runs will also (and especially) help you better absorb the interval workouts.
💡 Tip: Don't run them too fast and make sure to keep a comfortable breathing pace! We can't repeat it enough, but a base endurance run should leave no traces, neither physical nor mental. Respecting this principle means giving yourself every chance to arrive fresh and well-rested at the starting line.
🐇 Working on your MAS to better manage your pace
A 10 km race is fast-paced. Even if you're a beginner and your goal is to finish, you'll apply a fairly high intensity, far from that of easy runs. That's why you need to work on your speed through MAS (maximal aerobic speed).
Concretely, these are workouts in the form of short intervals with fast intervals, between 95 and 105% of your MAS. At the beginning of the plan, you'll have 30/30 workouts (30 seconds of intense effort / 30 seconds of recovery). Then, over the weeks and cycles, the duration maintained at high intensity will increase up to about 800 meters.
🙏 We're not going to lie: these workouts will be tough. So tackle them one after the other, trust the process, and truly appreciate being able to do a little more each week.
🔥 30' Threshold and 60' Threshold: advantages not to be overlooked when preparing for a 10 km
Workouts for the 30' Threshold and 60' Threshold are essential components of Campus training plans. The 30' Threshold corresponds to a pace you are able to maintain for 30 minutes, while the 60' Threshold refers to a pace you can sustain for 60 minutes. Thus, as long as you aim for a time under 1 hour, your race day pace will fall between these two thresholds.
The intervals in these workouts will be longer than for MAS because, by definition, the pace is less fast. Here you'll work on your resistance to better handle the second part of your race, when your body will start to ask you to slow down.
⚠️ Warning: there is a good chance that the threshold workouts will sometimes leave you discouraged, wondering how you should be able to maintain this pace for 30 or 60 minutes when 4 or 8 minutes feel so difficult after a few intervals. That's normal! Paces are calculated assuming you are in great shape and well-rested. In the middle of a training week, with accumulated fatigue, they will inevitably be harder to maintain. That's where mental strength also comes into play!
🔑 Sessions at a specific 10 km pace
During the final phase, runs at a specific 10 km pace allow you to understand your target race pace. The principle will be to have you perform increasingly longer intervals as the race approaches while cutting recovery (in other words, leaving you very little rest time between the different blocks).
About a week before race day, you will be able to perform a test workout with 2,000-meter blocks to validate your pace and have it ingrained in your legs by race day. Keep in mind that it's NORMAL for it to seem difficult to you. A 10-kilometer race is not a walk in the park, even for beginners who are not seeking a new record.
🔥 Trust us: you can do it.

Our tips for effective preparation and lasting success
What if not everything is about the training workouts? Success in a 10 km also involves strength & conditioning, good recovery, and good nutrition. And this, regardless of your level and your goal!
💪 Strengthen Your Body to Prevent Injuries
At Campus, we are convinced that strength & conditioning is a true foundation of performance and longevity in running. That's why we directly include a strength & conditioning workout per week in the training plans. Don't skip it!
💡 Tip: organize your week so that you schedule this strength & conditioning workout away from interval workouts. This way, you will avoid soreness from these key workouts.
😴 Recovery, a factor often neglected
Recovery is progress. It may seem counterintuitive to you, but it's actually one of the fundamentals of training. If you observe your program, you'll quickly notice that our plans revolve around 4-week training cycles:
3 weeks of load
1 light week, called “assimilation”.
It's essential for both your physical and mental recovery.
But that's not all! Recovery also and especially depends on having a sufficient number of hours of sleep and quality nightly rest on a daily basis. Without this solid foundation, you risk seeing all your efforts collapse. So listen to your body and sleep enough!
👉 By the way, we advise you to take a few minutes before starting your preparation to run 10 km. Even if the mileage remains relatively accessible and the time spent training is quite limited, you must be aware of the actual time you have to allocate to your preparation. If you're a beginner, you might not yet be used to fitting workouts into your daily routine. So be realistic, setting a challenge that respects your desire to push yourself but also your physical and mental capacity to endure the effort.
🥑 What nutrition is needed to run well?
Since we're talking about the pillars of progress, it's time to look at nutrition. Here, nothing new under the sun: you must adopt a healthy and balanced diet in sufficient quantities.
Don't forget that running is an endurance sport. You're stringing together kilometers and burning lots of calories. To maintain the distance, you need to provide your body with lipids and proteins, certainly, but especially carbohydrates which will be its main source of energy. So don't skimp on carbohydrates, especially as race day approaches!
💡Little tip: if you're prone to stomach aches and intestinal issues, limit your fiber intake a few days before your race. Avoid whole foods, raw fruits and vegetables, legumes etc. And of course, skip foods that are too fatty and difficult to digest (fried foods, red meat, etc.)
Regardless of your level, you can reach a milestone on 10 km. If you're starting out, you have the advantage of having a significant range of factors to adjust according to your goals. Frequency, volume, intensity (in this order), but also nutrition, diet… everything can be optimized to allow you to improve, even without aiming for astronomical performance.
So take the time to prepare well with a sufficiently long plan (8 weeks minimum), set yourself a realistic goal that takes into account your background and your current fitness as well as your daily training resources.
🔑 Key points to remember:
👉 The 10 km is an accessible distance regardless of your level as long as you are prepared for it.
👉 The average time to run 10 kilometers is 1 hour 01 minute and 46 seconds for women and 50 minutes and 41 seconds for men.
👉 It is highly recommended to choose a structured, adapted training plan that fits your level and objectives AND is long enough to allow you a gradual load increase.
👉 A 10 km plan includes MAS workouts, easy runs, long runs, specific run pace workouts, strength & conditioning, and 30' and 60' Threshold workouts.
👉 Don't neglect recovery and nutrition to reach your goals!
