After a quick analysis in the shoe store, the "bad" news has come: you are an overpronating runner! The diagnosis is conclusive and you are already being offered a pair of shoes specially adapted to your foot. After some trials, you decide to take some extra time to reflect before committing to new sneakers. Is pronation, even excessive, a real problem? Together we will help you decode the situation to help you see more clearly.
What does overpronation running means?
A pronating runner is a runner whose ankle collapses inward upon ground contact. There are three main types of running gait: pronated, neutral/universal, and supinated. The vast majority of runners have a universal/neutral or pronating stride.
How to know if one is a pronating or supinating runner?
To know if you are pronating or supinating, it's quite simple. You can use your phone and film your stride from behind or check the worn area of your shoe:
Overpronation running: what should I do if I have a pronation stride?
Now it's official, you have a pronating stride according to the previous table. Is it serious, doctor? Not at all! There are two situations to differentiate:
the context of the injury
The accidental discovery during an analysis
👣 Pronation is a natural movement of the foot
A pronating stride is found in nearly one out of two runners. Pronation is a completely natural movement of the foot. In the scientific literature, there is no evidence demonstrating a higher number of injuries if you have one type of running gait over another. There is also no performance advantage to having one type of stride over another.
👉 In short, if all is well, there's no need to worry or any habits to change!

🚨 Overpronation running: when does pronation become a problem?
Pronation can become a problem if it is painful, with a marked and recent collapse of the plantar arch. If your foot is flat to begin with, no problem, but if the collapse is more pronounced than before and/or you have pain inside the foot or under the foot (plantar fasciopathy), there are probably things to correct to improve the situation.
🏋️♂️ Overpronation running: how to correct overpronation of the foot?
The goal is not necessarily to completely correct your stride (because a little pronation is normal), but to rebalance and strengthen your running motion. It is very relevant to focus your strength & conditioning on the foot's intrinsic muscles, the foot's extrinsic muscles, and the hip stabilizers.
👟 What Shoes to Rebalance an Overpronating Stride?
Contrary to what is often thought, the shoe alone has only a limited impact on overpronation. The foot remains relatively free inside the shoe, and it alone cannot correct an excessive ankle movement.
If you truly wants to provide support, it is preferable to consider:
custom orthopedic insoles or sports adapted, which provide a personalized arch support to rebalance foot pressure.
A targeted strength & conditioning program (foot, calves, pelvis) to improve stability and the foot's natural control.
In summary, the shoe must accompany the movement, not force it: the correction comes from the foot and the body, not only from the equipment.
Ultimately, being an overpronator does not automatically mean you need to change the way you run. The way your foot rolls inward is only one part of your overall running mechanics, and even neutral runners can experience issues such as shin splints or plantar fasciitis. Rather than trying to force a “perfect” stride, focus on gradually strengthening your feet and legs, choosing comfortable running shoes, and paying attention to how your body responds to training. When hitting the ground, your foot naturally distributes pressure from the outer edges toward the big toe as you push off. This movement varies from one runner to another. Unless your running pattern is causing pain or recurring problems, correcting it unnecessarily could even increase your risk of injury. The goal is not to achieve a textbook stride, but to develop a strong, efficient and comfortable running form that works for you.
🙏 In summary: trust your body, strengthen it, and let technique naturally follow.
